Makara Beach, a treasure West of Wellington
Experience NewZealand – Makara Beach
When touring around the western suburbs of Wellington, I really wanted to explore Karori which seemed to me a beautiful suburb. Once there it was easy to follow the Makara Road to Makara Beach. I was stunned by the authenticity of this beach, to me it really made a huge impact. I instantly fell in love with this beautiful beach. Just because it has that raw quality, the large pebbles, the driftwood, the shells, all together with the huge waves on this very windy afternoon. And luckily because of the weather forecast forecasting rain and wind, there were not too many people around either, so I had the place to myself, and the weather was not at all that bad, it really looked even promising as well.
First checking the tide if it would be safe to follow the shore to the Makara Walkway, I intended to try this out just for a small bit, to get some overview of this beach from above.
Much to my surprise in the valley leading to the cliff you could hardly feel the wind anymore which enabled me to enjoy the beautiful putiputi (flowers) of the many harakeke(nz flax) growing there. I ended up at the beautiful steep cliff where not only I could look back to the newly discovered beach…
But was also stunned at the same time by looking directly to the waves of the Tasman Sea as well as the Cook Strait and the shores of the South Island.
And the sky seemed to brighten as well so all the ingredients for the best (windy) picnic place ever!
This place has taken me by surprise and words can hardly express how I felt. One of those rare moments that nature really takes your breath away.
Beautiful Wellington, capital of NewZealand
Wellington, the coolest little capital in the world.
Arrived in Wellington on a sunny afternoon and the drive with the car from the airport, along Evans Bay and Oriental Bay, makes you instantly feel mesmerised by the beautiful views and at the same time it is a coming home to New Zealand!
The city centre of the capital has so much to offer, it is very busy day and night and yet it feels cosy and colourful.
Oriental Bay so close to the city is beautiful and the water of the Wellington Harbour looks so cool and fresh!
What better way to find out than by strolling on the walkways along the water, soaking in the views and hearing the tuis sing their song to celebrate the spring and the nectar they enjoy from the flowers of the harakeke, the New Zealand flax. At the moment the tui welcomes me, my heart leaps, I feel very much at home again?
Almost on my way
For many years now, New Zealand plays an important role in my life.
Living there, years ago, really changed my life completely. Having been able to enjoy that unique nature and fresh air once, it created at the same time a longlife feeling of longing to go back.
I am definitely an ‘oceanswimmer’, as they call people who feel they are in between two countries, still not sure where they really belong.
However in this day and age we are all global citizens and it is now easier to go and just visit NZ than years ago.
So it is time again to hop on the plane and fly to my beloved Aotearoa?
My goal is to discover areas of NZ where I have not been yet and some of the places I travel to, will be reconnections with earlier experiences.
New Zealand always gives me that feeling of homecoming far away from home.
It is that place where I feel the most free and where my spirits rise to go on an adventure, to explore that beautiful nature, walk on an amazing beach or listen to the beautiful Maori language.
Stay tuned for not long now until I hope to tell you about my first adventure.
